The Campaign

What makes Ben’s campaign unique?

Ben’s story is unique as he plans to Design, Build and Race the boat to win the Mini Transat 2011.

The Mini Transat started in 1977 and is held every other year. To date Britain has not been able to claim the winners podium. Ben aims to do just that – to be the first British yachtsman to win this race!

The Programme

Solid design package -

Data found in testing as well as comparable VPP data between existing designs and base design will then be used to finalise the design, ensuring confidence in a quick boat for the 2011 campaign.

High tech Composite Build Construction of the boat will incorporate the latest techniques and materials used within the high end composite racing yacht industry,
ensuring the lightest and stiffest structure to enter the 2011 entry of the
Mini Transat.

Early launch - As shown from past Open 60 and Volvo campaign such as PRB, Illbruck and ABN AMRO Ben believes that an early launch is imperative to a successful campaign, as it allows time for modifications, and ironing out any glitches well before the start of the qualifying process. Ben aim’s to launch his boat early to guarantee a successful campaign.

Finot Mini 6.5m No. 196

For 2009 season Ben has chartered a Mini Transat 6.5 in return for an extensive refit of the boat by him. The boat forms the first part of his plan for a successful entry the 2011 edition of the Mini Transat Race.

"Mini Minx" Sail No. '196' is a successful 1996 Finot water ballasted fixed keel design.

This year Ben will sail the boat, gather data and subsequently use this successful craft as the basis upon which to finalise his design to build for 2010 in order to qualify for 2011.
