Currently clawing his way around the Lizard on the 15th day of this epic Round Britain and Ireland passage the Finish Line is within reach but it is now all down to the wind gods.
Having lost his big spinnaker earlier today as it shredded itself (worn out and finally gave up the ghost) Ben is feeling the loss of this sail as he continues tonight sailing almost directly downwind - he could really do with this sail now.
No matter, although exhausted after a tortuous week of storms and big seas, Ben is dragging out that last ounce of energy, stamina and will power to keep pushing the boat through the night.
If he can cross the finish line running south from Start Point within the next 9 hours and 17 minutes he will have achieved the amazing feat of completing the Solo Non-Stop RBI passage in under 15 days.
So the race is on and all he has to do is get his average speed over the next 9 hours up to 6.75 knots - sounds easy - it's not - half of these vital hours are also throwing tidal current the wrong way - pushing him away from the finish!
Will he make it - we'll know in the morning..........
Last words from Skipper Ben - "I am absolutely exhausted, I can't think straight, this last week since the Shetlands has been really hard, and I'm gagging for a pizza, beer and a shower - in any order!"
